Well done and thank you to all those Labour Party members who brought along, to our recent CLP meeting, contributions for the Orpington Foodbank Christmas Appeal.
We managed to fill over 30 carrier bags with donations of food, toiletries and a few Christmas treats, which weighed in at an impressive 111kg, all of which were loaded into a van and delivered.
Facing Christmas with little or no money and struggling to make ends meet is a reality for many. Unable to afford food to make a decent hot meal, let alone presents, it is a very daunting time for too many. At Christmas, some families will find it hard to make ends meet, struggle to pay bills, and have to decide between eating and warming a room in the house. It can be a difficult time, with the prospect of treats and luxurious presents out of the question.
This year brings added concern with the rollout of Universal Credit. The latest statistics show that the situation is worsening by its impact. Figures show that Foodbanks in areas of full rollout for six months or more have seen a 30% average increase in demand.
