Labour Party Stand at the “O” Festival

Tim Fisher reports from the OLP stand at the Big O Vintage Festival

Saturday 4th July turned out to be one the hottest days of the year, so the weather was perfect for us to set out our stall at the ‘Big O Vintage Festival’ in the Priory Gardens. The Festival was a great opportunity for us to meet people, to make new contacts and remind them that Labour is now the only opposition Party in Orpington and Bromley.

The Labour ‘High Striker’ proved to be very popular with people queuing to have a go at ringing our  bell. In fact we were so popular that we exhausted our supply of lolly pops, badges and balloons. We told visitors to our stall that we were going to ring the bell every time we heard a Tory lie, but even that didn’t deter Orpington Tory MP Jo Johnson having a go (it took him three attempts).

The irony of such a popular community event being held at the Priory, the buildings there being due to close because of Tory cuts, was not lost on people. In fact lots of people talked to us about how they were noticing a progressive and accelerating decline in their Council services and how, when they complained, they were ignored.

Whilst the Festival was undoubtedly notable for the huge number of people attending and great atmosphere, it was also notable because of the absence of the Tories and the Lib Dems, neither party had a stall, which left us wondering….Complacent? Given Up? Arrogant?
