One of the centrepieces of our stall at the recent Cray Festival was the National Health Service’s 65th birthday card. We invited festival-goers to sign the giant card and leave messages of goodwill – and more than 160 people did just that.
Our original intention had been to present the signed card to Orpington MP Jo Johnson. We were however, thwarted in our attempts when Mr Johnson left the festival after just ten minutes.
So on the evening of 24th July, Labour’s newly-selected candidates for Cray Valley East – walking past a group of bemused-looking Tories waiting for the bar to open – delivered the card to the Orpington Conservative Association’s headquarters.
We included a covering letter for Mr Johnson in which we said:
Most of those who signed the card don’t feel that the National Health Service is safe in Conservative hands, so we decided to leave the card with you as a reminder of just how important the NHS is to the people of Orpington.
